Facebook GHC Women Scholarship

Surabhi Bhargava Hello. I am Surabhi Bhargava, a student at Columbia University in the City of New York. I am an alumnus of IIT Guwahati. Any questions regarding the Facebook GHC (Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing ) Scholarship is welcome.

Could you brief up top 3 things why one should apply this Scholarship?(Also attend GHC Conference) You can also mention the after Scholarship experience too.

1) Its an experience like none other. No one can imagine how big it is without going there.
2) Its a storehouse of opportunities.
3) Its such a wonderful community which offers a great sense of belonging. I made a few friends there that I am still in touch with. Its just great.
I am trying to go there again myself this year! Lets see how that works out for me

What quality do you think a candidate should definitely have to get this scholarship
I’m not sure if I am well qualified to answer this, but what I observed during my time there was that all the scholarship recipients have in some way empowered the women around them and have contributed to tech in meaningful ways.
Would you recommend this program?
Definitely, its amazing! I’d love to be back.
Could you mention some of activities which you were part of in college? Have you won any other Scholarship/Opportunities while in college?
I was a part of many organizing teams back in India for my college events. I was also a part of the Placement team as well as the Swimming team. I did get another fellowship from tGELF while in college. Grad school is kind of busy, but I still try to stay involved as much as possible.
Tell us about Experience at GHC Conference? ( Also mention things that inspired you over there)
GHC is an overwhelming and fantastic experience, especially if its your first time. Its so huge that you really need to prioritize and pick out the things that you really want to do. You get to meet amazing people, doing wonderful stuff with inspiring stories to tell.
I attended a few sessions and panels of various companies and some of them demonstrated the work that’s currently going on there. That was great. The Keynote, without any doubt was the most inspiring and everyone should attend that if they get a chance.
How did you hear about this Scholarship?
I came across a post on facebook in a group much like this one.
What do you ‘think’ was why your application stood apart from rest of students applied? Some tips too:)
It is really hard to tell. I was just honest in my responses and wrote what i genuinely feel and believe in. I think that did the trick.
What advice will you give a First year/second year students?

Network as much as you can. In the first and second years, atleast i was not certain what i wanted to do. GHC is an amazing place to learn about what’s going on in tech and learn about the opportunities available. Also, its a great place to look for internship opportunities. So do prepare before hand. It always helps.

What tips would you provide to a first time attendee at the GHC 2018 conference?

As I already mentioned, network as much as you can. If you are seeking an internship or a full time opportunity, target the career fair. Prepare beforehand and most importantly, have fun.

What was it like attending GHC as a part of Facebook?

It was great. We also got to speak with some of the engineers at Fb which was cool. They also had some events regarding how to crack a coding interview and a few AMA panels. There were Lean In sessions too which was quite new for me then.

About the Studying Abroad. – What advice would you give students who are interested to pursue studies abroad after bachelors? When should one start preparing?
It depends as to when you realize that you want to pursue a degree abroad. If you’ve known it all along, then it helps to do relevant internships and appear for the tests in the third year so that you’re ready to apply in the 4th year.
Can you please tell what preparations you did before attending the conference? Anything you did in particular?
It was my first time at the conference and I didn’t know the scale and about the opportunities that would be available. I just brushed up my resume and prepared a bit.
What are some of the important things to keep in mind while filling the application? What skills according to you, makes an applicant stand out and get selected for this (or any other) scholarship ?
I think I mentioned in one of the answers above that I probably am not the right person to answer what makes a person stand out. However, I feel anything that you’ve done to empower others in your community and have exhibited leadership helps. It also helps to draw upon personal experiences and how you’ve learnt from them.
